Lies & Lullabies (Hush Note #1) [Jonas & Kira] by Sarina Bowen

When I say I got into this book blind as a bat I MEAN IT. This book was waiting on my kindle and I was swamped studying for an exam. Once it was over I delved in. Haven't read the synopsis. I knew this series is going to be about a rock band but I was mildly surprised there was a girl involved.. (I was THAT out of it hehe). Also was surprised and not in a good way to realize this is a "surprise baby" trope which to say mildly isn't my favorite but I just exhaled trusting Sarina she knows what she's doing. I REALLY enjoyed this one, it wasn't what I was expecting on any level. It was an honest and mature love story that started when both MCs weren't honest OR mature but 5 years later they are both ready to face the truth and life differently.

When "Rock-Star" Jonas Smith needed to take a summer off he found himself visiting a small town in Maine his mother used to talk about when he was as small kid. His days were peaceful and quiet, writing music and swimming in the lake. Exactly what he had in mind. It was also where he met Kira Cassidy. He didn't want a summer fling and it's the last thing she needed as well, which is how they became friends, spending time together, getting to know each other. Kira knew almost anything there is to know about Jonas, except for who he really is and that's part of the reason why after their final night together she hasn't contacted him with the consequences..

Neither Kira nor Jonas were able to forget each other. For Jonas it was the first true connection he had and it changed him. But at the age of 25 he wasn't ready to delve into a relationship and so he cherished what he had hoping Kira finds her happiness without him. Kira on the other hand got more than she asked for on their final night which resulted in baby Vivi. She had so many beautiful heart felt memories of Jonas and though it didn't seem like she or her daughter will even see him even again she still held those close to her heart.

Five years later Kira is raising 4 years old Vivi with the help of her big brother Adam. They have always been close but the last few years, living together and raising Vivi on their own made them even closer. She couldn't have done it without him. Certainly not in their small town of Maine with the disapproving faces and remarks from everyone around them - including their father. He loves little Vivi but he had much to say to Kira about getting pregnant (and to her brother for being gay). No matter, they live in Boston now and though she had other plans in mind for her future she is content with what they have.

Needing a weekend off, Jonas returns to the one place he was happy with his two "Hush Note" band members  Quinn Montgomery and Nixon Winters together with his good friend and tour manager Ethan. He doesn't expect to meet Kira again nor to realize he has a family now he hasn't even known about. It isn't exactly the right time, with his single coming out the next day, being in the middle of a tour with a grumpy Quinn and a melancholy Nixon (though what's new?). He would be disappearing to his obligation in two days but also so will Kira, Vivi and Adam, returning to their life in Boston.

Jonas wants to make it work, he truly does, but getting Kira to trust and believe in him isn't easy. She had a real struggle these past few years but she has a life now and how can he fit in when he isn't even around?

Kira want to hope this can work out but how can she? Also it's not just her anymore, she might handle getting her heart broken again but what about little Vivi? Jonas has so much going on in his life, can she trust this thing between them won't get old?

But it DOES work because both want it in their heart of hearts and though they have hiccups once they start putting the cards on the table - their hearts and love together with their difficult schedule - a future and even a present IS possible.

I really enjoyed their journey. It could have been a lot more emotional and yet it wasn't. In the end Jonas knew EXACTLY what he wanted and he was putting his actions and words where it counted. It wasn't easy but he knew his little family was more than worth it. For Kira it wasn't easy to trust but she wanted to, and though she made her own mistakes these past 5 years she was done with them, she was done with blaming him for what he didn't know and couldn't be responsible for. She also wanted his love, once again, she wanted what they had and could have.

One last thing - Adam. Sweet, wonderful, caring, loving, thoughtful, selfless Adam. Sarina I BEG you write his book. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. I promise NOTHING in my life is going to hold me back me this time. Also it's already "half written" isn't it? ;)

I kindly received this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

ABOUT THIS SERIES

Hush Note is a Contemporary Romance series written by Sarina Bowen, Devney Perry and Rebecca Yarros. It focuses on the 3 members of the rock band "Hush Note" - Jonas Smith, Quinn Montgomery and Nixon Winters - each getting his/her own book of Happily Ever After.

The first two books have two things in common, first being "lost love" and the second is having a kid in the mix. Yet it was very different in everything else including the circumstances of these things. The last book brings the whole three members of the band to a different place which was beautiful to watch. It was also my absolute favorite. NIxon's story was totally different and while we've seen his tendency to self destruct with glimpses into the guy he can be when his addictions aren't swallowing him whole, the person to truly heal him and his heart is Zoe. He was on his way to getting better but only on the surface, only for the sake of others, not his own. Zoe changed that.

A great series! Highly recommend you give it a go. It has been my first reading of both Devney and Rebecca (as I'm already a HUGE fan of Sarina) and I'm so happy I was giving this opportunity to get to know them a bit.
