Into The Storm by Melanie Moreland

This book has been on my reading list for YEARS. I first added it to my books in 2014, but somehow this book got postponed SO many times, I can't believe I actually finished it today. I don't even remember who recommended it to me or how I got it on my list in the first place but it waited quite patiently for the right time and I'm really happy it wasn't abandoned along the way (as it happens with too many books to count or remember). This book wasn't an easy read at times, it was sad and emotional and yet there was always hope for both our MCs to finding a true HEA. It was one of the most endearing things about this book and yet it was also what made me a  bit weary at the end but I'll get to that later.

Joshua Bennet have been living a quiet peaceful life in his cabin when his life is being "invaded" by a woman who clearly went through an ordeal but can't remember who she is. At first, her arriving on his property makes him anxious but it doesn't take long for him to realize she is heaven sent especially for him. Being a rich very successful writer makes it easier for him to deal with his agoraphobia he can have everything and anything delivered to his door step and now the universe has send him a woman who couldn't be more perfect for him. Well, if he could be sure she was actually HIS and not someone else's girl, wife or mother..

The little frightful woman couldn't be better named than "Rabbit". I guess it could sound offensive but I got the feeling that for Joshua it WAS an endearment. I certainly took it as one and didn't think too much of it. Rabbit was badly beaten and had too many bruises to count but when she crashed her car into the tree while driving in the middle of  a storm she also lost her memory. While she was quite sure about a lot of things about who she is, she didn't remember who she was. No name, no recollection, not knowing what happened to her and where she was going. Staying with Joshua was more than easy for her. It was peaceful and beautiful and while Joshua could be grumpy at times she realized he has his reasons for the way he was living, he too went through a fearful and dangerous situation that left him vulnerable, he might LOOK recovered but he is a bit broken - like her.

Spending time together away from the world with the storm cutting off everything from them was a true experience that taught them both about love, healing and compassion. They didn't mean to fall in love with each other and yet somehow they have. But when the storm is over reality comes rushing back when Joshua's assistant finds out who Rabbit is! She is Elizabeth James and her husband Brian have been feverishly looking for her. While it broke Joshua's heart he knew he must do the right thing even if Rabbit still doesn't remember anything about her previous life OR her husband. But after bidding her farewell it doesn't take long for both to realize the horrible decision they have made and the consequences of returning Elizabeth right into the hands of her tormentor.

After years of isolation and solitude Joshua makes a real STAND to fight for his woman, for his precious Rabbit. Because no one means to him more than her and though he thought he was happy and content with the life he used to have, after having Rabbit in his life he knew nothing could ever be the same and he owes it for the both of them to build their HEA together and he surly has the means - friends he trusts and buckets of money to spend - to make it happen.

There's a lot happening in this book - the time they spend together falling in love, then Elizabeth getting back to her new life and remembering EVERYTHING, finding a way back together but then dealing with her tormentor but also making a family together with Bear (Joshua's dog) I almost forgot to mention - who seems to sense EVERYTHING and be the best kind of man's best friend. He was truly the sweetest. I also really appreciated both Joshua and Elizabeth CLEARLY needed therapy and they got it each for his/her own. While being together helped them deal with their fears, they still needed professional help - I applaud Melanie for not forgetting it and making it a part of the journey both needed to go through.

My only complaint about this book was the way everything has settled into place PERFECTLY. It was beautiful on the one hand, and yet for me it was a bit too much sugary. I feel as though the book could have ended a lot sooner giving us a totally satisfactory ending to the story, there was no need for such a detailed ending. For me it made the whole story feel unbelievable, they start this story both being a bit flawed / damaged and in a way they end it being PERFECT. The villain seemed to be "un-dealt with"  at first which felt strange but then we got a few closures with him that I simply didn't need. The author was adamant about the story ending in SUCH a perfect manner which is great, really, they both deserved it, but do WE? I think there is something better in leaving the reader with a story that is finished but also keeps the characters in our head with a future WE can build them.
