(Un)Masked by Anyta Sunday & Andy Gallo

Looking at the cover of this one I kept humming "The Phantom of the Opera" while reading it, but though there's a theater involved and a guy in a mask, there is NO resemblance what-so-ever. This is a sad story of three guys who just wanted to be loved. There were quite a few crushing moments in this one that at a certain point I wasn't sure we're even going to get a happy ending. But we did. Even if prices were paid for it to happen.

Jaydan "Jay" Walker is living with is best friend and "brother" Graham "Gristle" Thistle. They only have each other and though it's hard to navigate life they do their best, even dreaming of producing a play together. Jay being the writer and Gristle being in charge of all the rest. But first they need to find a theater that would actually give them a chance to put a play together.. Jay is starting to lose faith in finding anyone willing to put their production. Hope comes from entirely different direction when Jay hears a beautiful tune from a young accordion player.

When Jay sees Lethe Cross playing the accordion on the beach near the cafe he works at he is drawn to the guy enough to try and follow him. He misses him only to see him again another day being beaten by a thug. Coming to his aid, the reserved Lethe finds in Jay his hearts' desire - someone who sees HIM for who he is. From then on they become friends and soon after lovers. Spending time together, enjoying each other's company even though there is something Lethe is keeping a secret and once he confesses to Jay, Jay first doesn't know if he can believe the curse Lethe claims he has but once he SEES it himself he realizes it's the truth and it has hurt Lethe for all of his life and probably will keep hurting him till his last day unless they find a way to lift the curse.

Through the buildup of Jay and Lethe's relationship, the relationship between Jay and Gristle changes as well. Jay has to keep Lethe away from Gristle (because of the curse) and so he spends less time with him making Gristle jealous even though he knows he should be happy for Jay. It's just that it's always been the two of them against the world and now that Jay has found happiness in Lethe he feels like he has far less to offer and it doesn't help that Jay HATES Gristle's new job. But Gristle likes living life on the edge and Jay realizes there is little he can actually DO to change anything. He just needs to finds a way to have both guys in his life.

I won't say too much about what happens because I don't want to spoiler anything.. I'll just say that Thoth - the guy who put the curse - is an evil elf who has his mind set on torturing Lethe as best as he can and when he sees Lethe finding happiness with Jay he becomes even more vindictive in his mission even if Jay is trying to find a way to please him enough to remove the curse from Lethe.

It was a unique story. I liked the whole idea behind it though it felt at times too sad and hopeless. I loved the tender relationship Jay and Lethe shared. They were sweet and endearing together and though Gristle can be a bit OTT at times, I forgave him for the beautiful relationship he and Jay shared. But there was always a current of sadness laced in every encounter with either Lethe or Gristle. It made the reading of this one a bit heavy. I needed to take my breaks. At the end, when the story was resolved, I was still sad even though I was happy as well. It was bittersweet ending really.
I got this book somewhere around the beginning of this year, but not so long after Anyta decided to remove all her none contemporary novels which means - this book is currently unavailable. I'm not sure if/when it will be back, maybe on a later date under a different pen-name? I was contemplating what to do about this book but having it and not reading it wasn't a real option and since I review everything I read.. Here we are.. I'm sorry I'm reviewing something you can't get but if you're REALLY interested in this novel probably best to contact Anyta directly.
