This book was so fun and engaging! I was hooked right from the start! I loved Jason. He was truly a great guy so it's no wonder he makes friends whenever he goes, even without realizing he has a very special and unique power over a species he didn't even know existed - Vampyrs!
When Jason Thorpe helps rescue a "kid" while on a carpentering job in Washington he doesn't know the effect it's going to have on his life. But that situation and everything that happened there made him take the right decision for his own life and that's starting a new in New Orleans in a place that was gifted to him by his best friend after his passing. Yet once he was there, just looking at the place he finds the best partner and friend in Ode. Together with her family she envelopes Jason's life with warmth and love, though she hopes he will have more of that in a partner but Jason is quite reluctant.
A few months passes. Jason is content as business owner, working with a great friend who helps make the business prosperous, what can he ask more in life, really? A hurt vampyr stumbling into his shop isn't one of them.. and from there, everything seem to take a HUGE spin and while Jason is TRYING to keep up it's hard especially once the Prince of the vampyrs is there on a visit and wants to see HIM. While he is intrigued and later on HIGHLY ATTRACTED to the "guy" he isn't sure getting together with Varic Maedoc is such a great idea.. Yet as they keep on meeting even if for the shortest time it's enough for both to realize being apart gets harder and harder and that's even without discussing the "elephant" in the room - Jason's unique abilities over the vampyrs and what it actually MEANS.
Jason and Varic plunge into a relationship they aren't even sure how to make work. I guess Varic is more certain it WILL work because it HAS to. Jason is his Mate, there is no more to it! Yet Jason is a human and so the whole dynamic is different than with two vampyr mates. Jason is quite confused about his emotions and his OTT attraction toward Varic but it doesn't take him long to realize there is NO WAY of staying away so they need to make it work - somehow!
Figuring out what's going on with them is not their only concern when someone seems to keep on threatening Varic, or maybe Jason? it's not really clear.. and so alliances and friendship need to be examined and put to the test before Jason and Varic can claim a HEA with one another.
This isn't your usual vampyr read. I gotta say. Varic was very different from what I'd expect a Vampyr Prince to be. While possessive and easily provoked when his mate is concerned he was still a nice and sensitive guy beneath it all. He wasn't "high handed" or too "alpha" in his behavior toward Jason (or his men). He felt actually quite genuine. That was a really nice touch to a trope I was getting farther apart from as I was looking for a more "contemporal" vampyr characters, being "spoiled" by all the non-paranormal books I've been reading lately. I want the vampyr to BE a vampyr, naturally, all growly and intimidating, and yet I want him (or her ;)) to be relate-able enough for me and that's not something this genre gives very willingly. We mostly get the Alpha douche.. I have no desire for these with or without fangs..
I really enjoyed this one. It was a fun easy read, it was a bit OTT emotion wise. Their overly emotional dialogues felt at times a bit off coming from two men, one - more than a thousand years old vampyr and the other - an ex-marine soldier who easily gets emotional enough to shed tears. I don't have a problem with men crying, but for me, or rather for him and the life he has lives, I would have expected him to be more "hardened" I guess. Nevertheless this is still a great read! I actually wonder if we'll get another installment or maybe even two? there are two couples I'm REALLY interested in reading about! First being Tiago and Hardrian (Varic's concelear and head of guards) they were THE CUTEST thing together. I would LOVE getting their story! The other couple is a sweet surprise in the end I would rather not say more about ;)
