This book was a real treat! With my schedule these days I don't have time or energy to read and I REALLY miss reading as I used to. Getting to read this incredible book was exactly what I needed. Loved the connection and interaction between Gunner and Posy. It was fun and light hearted and though their "falling apart" 15 years ago wasn't very pretty they mended their relationship beautifully. Gunner was exactly the confidence boost Posy needs right now, and for Gunner this is a real opportunity to consider what he wants in life. He isn't a kid anymore and he might have his reasons to avoiding New York but it's time to look the past square in the eyes.
Gunner Scott grew up in New York but he didn't have the luxuries he currently has. It's easy for him to remember the struggles and the hard work he needed to put into everything he wanted. That's why he worked so hard as a bartender on "Paxton" hoping to get another promotion but it was stolen from him by the the boss' daughter. That was 15 years ago. Now he own a security company together with his best friend Max Bayer and he lacks for nothing. When Max asks him to help on a job as a barista for the same woman who stole his promotion he isn't thrilled.. But seeing Posy again brings back memories and most of them are of happy and fun times. Makes him wish he can rekindle what they used to have back then even if just until the job here is done.
Posy Paxton made enough bad decisions. But she is done with those. She is now a business owner of "Posy's Pie Shop" and though it's hard work for sure, it's totally hers and she is proud of what she achieved with her ten fingers. Newly divorced, living together with her sister Ginny and her son Aaron she in content (even if also dead tired most of the time). When she puts a sign for a barista literally the last person she expect is the one that got away - Gunner. Back then she made the conscious choice between the sexy and easy going Gunner to the put together and serious Spalding. Well, it wasn't a very difficult one when Gunner disappears one day never to return again.. But marrying Spalding was a mistake and not only because of their divorce settlement. Now seeing him and his girl friend Saroya on a daily basis is driving her bananas.
Gunner knows NOTHING about coffee or how to make it. He hasn't tasted it since college and isn't really interested now. But he needs to be in this cafe and look for "The Plumber" who posts hints to recent murders using the place's WiFi. Max has his own personal reasons of tracking the guy and it doesn't hurt that there's some sort of connection between these killings to Xian Smith (the same villain from the first installment who compromises processors in electronic devices).
As time goes by Gunner finds himself enjoying his new job and the routine he has build with Posy and her little family. But he has a job to do and he isn't finding what he is looking for which means his time with Posy might be coming to an end soon. He wants more - Posy does as well - but there are too many lies between them (what he is REALLY doing working in her shop) and also with him having to run the West Coast operation it's hard imagining a future together.
I could say more about this book. It was really a JOY to read. I loved the progression and pace of this book. The romance was the center for sure but the suspense helped keeping me at the edge of my seat. There is more than one (or even two) villains and I was a bit disappointed when we didn't really get an ending for the mystery part but it also means there is more to look forward to! Can't wait for the next installment!
I kindly received this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

ABOUT THE SERIES
The Company is a Contemporary Romance series by Sarina Bowen. It focuses on a security company (with a secret name..) ran by Max Bayer and Gunner Scott (together with Max's father).
The first installment starts with Max's brother - Eric whom we've already met in the Brooklyn Bruisers series as one of the players but aside from that there is really no connection between the series (though I HIGHLY recommend you read both).
One day we might actually learn the secret name of the company but now, after 2 books it's still a kept secret. Though in each book we get a HEA we don't get the full suspense arc. The same "bigger" villain is still out there. I hope Sarina won't leave us hanging for long before the third installment!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
