OUTSTANDING. I really don't have enough words to describe how heart breakingly beautiful the second part of Lindsay and Drew's story progressed (and ended). While the first part "Gentleman Wolf" - was told solely from Lindsay's POV in the second part we get Drew's sole POV. I can't imagine the struggle Lindsay was in during the time after making Drew a Werewolf, but Drew has his own personal turmoil. I gotta say, I wanted to strangle him at times (and I wasn't the only one..) but I could also understand why he was unable to trust himself and his emotions when everything was tainted by their bond.
I'm getting ahead of myself.. So let's go back to a reminder of what this Duet of books is about. Please note this is a REMINDER which also means if you haven't read the first of this duet - first YOU MUST and second, please don't continue on reading as this will contain MAJOR spoilers for you.
Lindsay Somerville is a Werewolf, when his pack leader Marguerite de Carcassonne tasks him to find important documents for her in Edinburgh concerning the whereabouts of her maker Alys, he isn't thrilled but accepts. That's where he stumbles upon Drew Nicol and though it takes him long enough to seduce him he is willing to put in the effort. Everything about Drew simply feels right.
Lindsay's reluctant to be in Edinburgh has everything to do with his Master (the one who made him) Duncan MacCormaic. Duncan's only reason for turning Lindsay was his likeliness to the only one he truly wanted and could never have - his own maker Francis Neville. Duncan is a cruel and twisted man. He not only turned Lindsay but enslaved and tortured him for YEARS before Francis and his own maker Marguerite found him and saved his life.
The years went by but Duncan's obsession with Lindsay never faltered making Lindsay look behind his back constantly making sure Duncan is never too close. Finding Drew almost made him forget himself. But when Duncan's gang finally came to try and re-capture Lindsay they severely injure Drew which was the catalyst of Lindsay turning him into a Werewolf to save his life.
That's basically where the first part ends. The note is VERY bitter. Drew have never asked to become a Werewolf and certainly not to have his will taken from him with Lindsay being his Master forever. The connection, the shared emotions, the desires and needs he feels from Lindsay makes him question his own feelings. Does he TRULY want Lindsay or is it the bond making him feel and react this way? That's why he decides to stay away and though they have met a few times the last 30 or so years it always ended in the same bitter taste.
For reasons Drew couldn't understand the last few years have brought Lindsay back to Edinburgh and that's how their little pack learns that a skeleton of half man half wolf resurfaced rapped in a carpet.. Hector? ~cough cough~ Oops.. Lindsay couldn't handle the matter being known in the city so Marguerite asks Drew to accompany her to buy said skeleton before it ends in the wrong hands mostly the order of the White Ravens who have been searching for any evidence they can of Werewolves for their own twisted reasons.
When Marguerite and Drew finally see Lindsay they are in SHOCK. I don't know how I didn't have nightmares about his current situation.. With the help of his close friend and manservant Wynne Wildsmith, Lindsay have found a way to be rid of ALL his problems Wolfbane. Which might have the potential of severing his bond to Duncan making it impossible for him to order him around, as well as freeing Drew from their own bond - the one thing Drew have asked for time and again (even if he never believed it could be done). Well, it CAN be done but it is also basically killing Lindsay in the process. I couldn't breath half of the time I was reading of Lindsay's state. It was HORRIFYING.
So there's the story of the skeleton, the order of the White Ravens which Marguerite fears might know what happen to her maker (and lover) Alys. There is Lindsay and Drew's relationship - back and forth through the years as well as now when Drew needs to come to his own terms of his true feelings for Lindsay. But there is also Duncan (and Francis) always in the background influencing Lindsay's decision and making his conviction of being FREE of him at final last at any cost.
This book was IMPOSSIBLE to put down. I LOVED the first part and the second was even better! It broke my heart too many times to count. My stomach hurt half of it for sure. But it was ALL WORTH IT.
Can't recommend this book - and duet - enough. Do yourself a favor and grab these two NOW. If you are currently quarantined (due to COVID-19) you have even less excuses. Just saying..
