Though I've been a fan of the Midnight Breed series for YEARS now, and it's basically (still) my favorite Vampire series I feel like this book was TOO predictable, not in the story-line sense, but in the way the characters behaved (especially Knox). I could basically say what he was about to say/think before it happened. The way they fell for one another felt like Lara's usual format and though I usually enjoy it, I needed more from this book.
I KNOW we've met Knox Hunter before but for the life of me, I simply CANNOT figure out where from. He is a part of the "Hunter Program" and after his release he as built a home with 3 more survivors but he left after he lost the woman he cared for. I REMEMBER this from another book by Lara I hope I'll be add this detail somewhere in the future when it comes to me (or after I do enough of digging ;)). As this is a spin-off series all the details you need to know about the world is built into the story so this (as the other books in the series) can truly be read as a standalone bringing you a little bit into the interesting world Lara created for her Vampires.
Now on his own, looking for a new place to possibly put his roots he stumbles upon Lenora Calhoun's diner. She looks like a nice person so when an idiot arrives and starts pushing her buttons he intervenes only to realize the story is MUCH more complicated when an attempt is made on her life later that night. It's also how and when he comes to the conclusion he CANNOT leave as Leni is a Breedmate, the only mate a Vampire can have. She is half human half "other worldly", marked as such by a special body mark of a tear drop and a crescent moon. For his kind these women are sacred and though it doesn't mean HE has to take care of her (he can contact "The Order" who manages the Vampire world affairs) he is somehow enthralled by her strong character.
Leni is raising her 7 years old nephew almost since he was born. His father comes from the founder family of the small town she was raised up in and though a lot of people respect them, Leni knows these guys are up to no good especially the father of her sister's son who will be released from jail in the following days after he beat her almost to death. After he was sentenced to jail Leni's sister Shannon disappeared. Everyone said she just left because of her "weak character" but Leni knows her sister and while raising her sister's son she waits for her return (a part of the reason she hasn't left without a trace).
When Knox offers his help she is reluctant to accept his help. She doesn't NEED anyone and also she herself cannot be harmed because of her special Breedmate powers. Problem is Riley (Shannon's son) is human and so at least for HIS sake she needs to accept Knox's help. It's not just ONE man she is scared will take away Riley it's his whole family and the fact almost no-one in town will stand on her side, even not the sheriff.
Spending time together you realize what's going to happen. Knox isn't used to be considerate of other people's "wants and needs" he does what he believes is the "right" thing to do to protect both of them, coming as a bit high-handed and though his intentions are good and there's a reason for his behavior (how he was brought up) I still felt like his character was VERY stereotypical in every sense of the word. While Leni WAS a breeze of fresh air by her independence and competence I couldn't relate to their story because it was still too predictable in EVERY step they took in their relationship buildup.
The only thing that surprised me in this one would be the "body count". Knox is not your usual sweet hero/fighter. He is a killer and he isn't afraid to act like one when he feels like it. But I DID think it's quite strange he could get out of basically everything because it's the "right thing to do". Acting the vigilante is still against the law..
I'm not going to say more about this story (though there's actually a more of a mystery side) because I feel like I've had enough. Of this story and of this couple. It's not a "bad" book, it's simply an unremarkable one.
