The Wild Hunt by Cari Z.

This novella was DIFFERENT. As I'm not Christian, though I know OF the holidays at the end of the year, I'm still lacking tales and surely mythology which is why I had no idea what I'm getting into with this one. The Wild Hunt refers to Gwyn ap Nudd - the King of the Faeries, the Lord of Annwn and the Winter God who rides on Halloween collecting the souls of the dead. David Evans is five years old when he sees Gwyn for the first time on Halloween night and from then on it becomes an obsession of his to become worthy of The Wild Hunt and especially be worthy of Gwyn himself.

The years go by, and we follow David's life. His true constant is his mother he cares dearly for. His aunt and his cousins are mostly there, at times absent but in the end it's always the two of them. While he wants to go the the King of Winter he also knows that as long as his mother is alive he will not leave her so until then he spends his time becoming a Hunter, a Warrior.

I don't want to say more about this story as it's fairly short, for me it was an hour' read. It had a strange narration, giving all the people around David a voice but focusing around him and his obsession with being worthy of Gwyn and the life he hopes to have with him once he is ready to leave his current life behind. It was strange and different and truly enthralling ride with the winds of Halloween blowing and promising David, or as Gwyn calls him. Dafydd ap Evan, something majestic and eternal if he is only patient enough to finish fulfilling his worldly duties.
