This book was special. It's not my go-to read, and I had my issues with it because I wasn't sure Logan's need to dominate "worked" for me, but in the end, it didn't really matter, because a relationship isn't built solely on the sexual interaction. Sure, it's important but it's not everything. Curtis and Logan, on the outside, seem total opposite yet somehow they each brought into the other's life exactly what they needed. Not because they were perfect, no, it was their imperfection and their need to be there for the other even when their future didn't feel like possible. So even if you're not into kink (pain\bondage) there is SO MUCH more to this story and I ask you to give it a go.
We've already met both Curtis and Logan in the previous installment. Logan Rosner is one of the three owners of the new tavern in Rainbow Cove. Logan had a comfortable life in Portland, but he wanted something different. He wanted freedom, a place to express the person he really is, and not the one people expect him to be. Being the Chef of the tavern, getting to make and decide on the menu makes him happy like nothing in the past did. Yeah they might be struggling but he hopes and believes they can overcome it. This town has totally captured his heart and he doesn't want just the tavern to succeed he wants the town itself to do better as well.
The few times Curtis Hunt came to the tavern with his long time friend Nash (the MC in the previous installment) he was his usual self - grumpy. He has changed the last two years after losing the love of his life. He had it all, a partner he adored, a future together, true happiness. But he lost it all and now, besides his work as a chainsaw wood carver, nothing truly brings him joy, including the shy kid who makes THE best vegan food (even though he won't admit that to ANYONE).
Logan might look like a sweet gentle kid but he has a Dom personality and especially enjoys inflicting pain. Trouble is, his only boyfriend from Portland couldn't be more against kink and so he did his studies hoping to find himself a sub. But it's not that easy when most people see HIM as a sub considering his appearance. When Curtis sees how Logan handles himself against a grabby drunk, he realizes there might be more to the guy and he offers him a night together. These two couldn't be more surprised to find they are so well suited in their sexual needs.
Logan can't believe his luck finding someone like Curtis who not only craves pain and submission but is also willing to "teach" him or allow him to practice what he learnt in theory. But things get complicated fast when both men want more. Logan doesn't feel like Curtis is ready for more considering he is still in love with his dead partner. Curtis doesn't feel like he DESERVES to be happy, to continue on with his life with someone else. Also he truly wishes Logan all the best and he doesn't believe it's going to be him - 15 years his senior - stuck in this sleepy town. But little but little Curtis realizes things have gone too far and he simply can't conceive of a life without him. Logan on his part isn't going to give up on Curtis even if he seemed to give up on himself.
I loved the way the relationship progressed between these two, yeah it evolved (at first) about the sex but in the end of every scene - Logan takes care of Curtis with the most tender manor while Curtis struggles to endure his affection - THAT'S where and when the connection between them blossoms. Logan might give Curtis exactly what he SAYS he wants, and Curtis might enable Logan to explore his Dominant side, but they each need something MORE than just the scene. That was even more evident when they started exploring a more tender (sexual) relationship that showed there is more to them than just these scenes where both men were able to unwind.
My issue with Logan was his frequent thoughts of Dominance of someone stronger/bigger than him. I don't know why it rubbed me the wrong way but I was just weary of that. I get that he was treated all his life like a small weak guy and he needed to show he is NOT what he seemed, but I wasn't convinced by his need to show this to his PARTNER. I DID enjoy the way he started to change a bit physically to the person he WANTS to be. It was quite gentle yet it made him more comfortable in his own skin and isn't it what we all want?
All in all this one was definitely a great read. I actually really appreciate a book that takes me out of my comfort zone into a different kind of journey. I admit I don't usually delve into books I have my doubts about unless it's by an author I love and through reading most of Annabeth's books I can surely say I TRUST her and her writing to bring me a wonderful story to swoon over (in or out of my comfort zone).

ABOUT THIS SERIES
Rainbow Cove is a Contemporary MM Romance series by Annabeth Albert.
The series takes place in the sleepy town of Rainbow Cove where
everyone knows each other's business because that's how small towns are -
for good or for worse.
The series mostly centers around one of the three partners - Mason, Logan and Adams - opening a gay-friendly eatery out of the old bar and grill in the tourist town of Rainbow Cove, Oregon.
I ADORED all installments in the series. They are beautifully written and while some dealing with painful life situations they are a JOY to read. There's a bit of kink involved but it never takes the center from the relationship itself. Also most of these couple have quite a big age difference but it simply works for them.
HIGHLY RECOMENEDED!
