Trust with a Chaser (Rainbow Cove #1) [Mason & Nash] by Annabeth Albert

OUTSTANDING. This book was simply a TREAT to read. I loved everything about this book. My only complaint would be - life getting in the way of my reading and it's HARDLY Annabeth's fault now is it? Clearly when I plan on reading one of her books I should know better than read it in a busy weekend ;) Mason and Nash have very complicated lives even if on paper they are basically doing great. Yet they are both lonely and have a hard time dealing with what life and mostly other people expect them to do or even BE.

Nash Flint is the chief of Police in Rainbow Cove like his deceased father and though he is proud of his work and is basically married to the job he is grumpy and lonely. It's hard being gay and not allowing yourself to even be in a relationship because he doesn't want the gossip but mostly because he doesn't want to disappoint said dead father and mother (who isn't even living in Rainbow Cove anymore..). He knows what to do about his job but he sure doesn't know what to do with his personal life, especially when Mason Hanks returns to town. Exactly the WRONG guy to be tangled with. He might be the white sheep in the VERY black sheep family of Hanks but it's still not a good idea.

Mason Hanks have been away from town for a long while. He's not the kid he was before he left his trouble maker family. He studied in culinary school and now he is back in Rainbow Cove as a business owner - getting together with two good friends - one local, one more recent from his culinary studies - opening a tavern with more cultivated food and a positive approach to the gay community. He and his friends hopes to awaken the sleepy town and bring more tourists into the area. It won't be easy, but all three are determined to work hard to make their dream come true and even though they are still starting they are very positive and also very creative in finding ways to make the tavern more popular. When Chief Flint comes inside asking for a burger with a side salad and a glass of tea they are not ready, mostly Mason isn't ready for what's going to happen for the two of them from that instant where the cop who "terrorizes" his family is actually coming to order food and not look for faults.

Nash isn't his father, though some would think differently. He isn't looking for trouble or rather to find someone innocent as one and though he has too many "meetings" with the Hanks family, he clearly sees Mason isn't one of "them", even if he does his best to help them, he does it on the right side of the law. He's just a good son and brother (and uncle) even if he probably shouldn't be if he wants to keep his sanity (and his money..), but Nash can't fault him for wanting to have a family. He knows how it is.. He has a difficult relationship with his mother as well. She might be living in Portland, and she might know he is gay, but it doesn't mean she accepts it. For her it doesn't matter that Nash's father is dead, Nash is still expected to behave as his father expected him to even if it means he'll stay single and married to the job. Nash figured most of his life that's it's enough but little by little spending time with Mason he realizes it's NOT enough.

Getting tangled with Nash is not what Mason expected to happen, but there is attraction, and later on fun banter and enjoyable time together. Mason offers Nash a summer fling but it doesn't take him long to realize it is actually a TERRIBLE idea considering the emotions starts to creep in sooner rather than later. It's easy to hope and dream they could have more, but he knows Nash have NO desire to come out of the closet. He hasn't done it in the 40 years of his life, even when he was in a "serious" relationship in the past. It's just who he is and how he lives his life.

But Nash himself never expected to WANT so much from Mason either. At first it was the attraction, sure, but the easy conversations they have over food or while preparing food offers Nash something he never had before, something he didn't think he can or will ever have. He longs for more, but can't see himself coming out, not now maybe and possibly not ever.

As they spend more and more time together it's obvious they both want more, they both don't want what they have to end, and yet paying the price of "coming out" as a couple isn't something they are ready to do. It's not just their relationship, it's the animosity between the two families and all the complications these bring into their lives. But in a way it's exactly what brings them together. Just when Mason is about to break it all apart Nash starts to realize he doesn't want to give him up, but when the families DO get in their way it's time to take a stand, a different one than either one chose in the past.

I can't recommend this book enough. I LOVED everything about it, the easy friendship and sexy times these two shared, the small town life with the usual suspects of gossip, a bit of prejudice but also comradery and shared hopes and goals. Friends, family and neighbors can be too much, but can also be there at your side when you least expect them to. Mason and Nash might have had a bit of an age difference between them yet Mason was very mature and in control of his life, and though I can't say Nash wasn't he still had a lot to figure about about himself which somehow put them at the perfect place to form a beautiful relationship. There's more to this book, but I'm leaving it out for you to read and enjoy. Can't wait to get my hand on the next one. There were quite a lot of hints it's going to be about Logan (the tavern's cook) and Curtis (one of Nash's friends).

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

ABOUT THIS SERIES

Rainbow Cove is a Contemporary MM Romance series by Annabeth Albert. The series takes place in the sleepy town of Rainbow Cove where everyone knows each other's business because that's how small towns are - for good or for worse.

The series mostly centers around one of the three partners - Mason, Logan and Adams - opening a gay-friendly eatery out of the old bar and grill in the tourist town of Rainbow Cove, Oregon.

I ADORED all installments in the series. They are beautifully written and while some dealing with painful life situations they are a JOY to read. There's a bit of kink involved but it never takes the center from the relationship itself. Also most of these couple have quite a big age difference but it simply works for them.

HIGHLY RECOMENEDED!
