While we've read about Chance in the previous installments, the guy he actually IS and the guy he was portrayed as - are VERY different. Yeah, he was unnecessarily mean to Landon (and River) but it was his defense mechanism, and while I don't accept his behavior only on these grounds I think his relationship with Brook taught him many valuable lessons and allowed him to grow up into the man he WANTS to be. I wish we got more of the "reformed" Chance, the little in the epilogue wasn't enough for me. I wanted to see how he manages his life.. but alas, I'm quite content with what we did get :)
Chance Roosevelt-Sutton has it all, money, fame as a basketball player a mansion and cars to spare.. What he doesn't have is his own voice. He endlessly tries to please his father, but no matter how much he imitates the more "acceptable" younger brother Danny it doesn't work out. He always fails miserably. While everyone thinks of him as the cocky player, what he enjoys doing is very different than his image - reading books, teaching basketball to kids and tending his garden. But managing his image and mostly his father's approval is important if he wants to keep his LIFE as it is. His father is tired of Chance's reckless behavior. He wants him settled and GROWN UP and he wants it NOW and if he doesn't comply he is going to strip him of his allowance and all the luxury in his life.
After learning his father paid his PA to "spy" on him, he finds himself accepting Brook's offer to be his PA. He wanted a woman, he wanted someone to "look" the part and "be" the part as he was used to but though he was reluctant to employ someone he is HIGHLY attracted to, he didn't have any other choice and time was running short on his father's request he organizes the BEST rehearsal dinner for Danny's upcoming wedding.
Brook Kalson is on his last leg. He made too many mistakes and now he HAS to find a well paying job to keep the roof on himself and grandmother. While he lied on his application, he believes he can pull this job off and he NEEDS it so badly! But what he doesn't expect is to actually LIKE Chance and to realize he is basically a lonely guy who lives a life of shame and isolation and it breaks his heart. But with Chance's HUGE ego and pride he tries to help him out little by little, taking his time before he actually SAYS something to him.
Of course, there is always the sexual tension between them. Actually it's the main reason I'm not giving this one 5 stars. It got old somehow. This book is short, almost novella length, I wish we got more of them getting to know one another and being together and less sex. But I'll admit they were combustive together.
We got a very mild talk between Chance and Landon. I think it was as best as Chance could give at that moment, but I hope that once the words were out, and as they are both now in a committed relationship they can somehow remedy their friendship. For Chance it was mostly a friendship, something he missed, but though he enjoyed having sex with Landon, he wasn't "the one" for him, and so he wasn't ready to put his whole life on the line just to have Landon as his partner. He misled Landon in a way but Landon on his part tried too hard to stick to Chance even when it was OBVIOUS he wasn't ready. So in a way they were both to blame for what happened between them even if Chance for sure behaved really badly towards Landon who basically wanted to help Chance. Brook somehow saw right through Chance and so he was able to break down his walls differently but most of all show appreciation to who Chance really is, I don't think Landon truly got to know Chance, not like Brook managed. Brook might have his own patchy past, but to his core he is a great guy - in a way, just like Chance.
In the end together with Brook's grandmother (who played a very important role) they DID organize an AMAZING rehearsal dinner, one both his father and brother were highly impressed with but what happens during the dinner changes everything. It wasn't what I was expecting from either family member and I think in the end, they ALL got what they wanted. Chance never actually GOT what his father wanted for or from him. But on the other hand I can say his father doesn't really KNOW him at all, so he just waited impatiently for Chance to "grow up" and Chance took that to being "like Danny". It didn't work AT ALL and he was frustrated as all his attempts to being his father's son didn't work out. His whole LIFE didn't work out. It was truly sad but I'm happy with the way things worked out in the end.
I enjoyed this one though I truly wish we got just another chapter of Chance in his "new life" with Brook. Off to read the next (and last) one.

ABOUT THIS SERIES
Love Letters is a Contemporary MM Romance series by Antya Sunday.
These were quite sweet. I enjoyed the first three, the fourth one I
didn't like the turf and one of the MCs. The series focus mostly on
these close friends - the twins River and Landon and two of their best
friends Ben and Duke. Unlikely or not, they find their HEA! Length wise
all of these are somewhere between a novella to a rather short novel and
yet we generally do feel like we got the whole story.
