INTENSE! If I had one word to describe this book, that's the word I'd use. If I had two to spare I would add - AWESOME. This book was SO captivating, I loved the dynamics of the book, as well as the connection between Jake and Darcy. Even though they don't really know each other, there is something about their years long mystical connection that made it possible in my head. Even though this IS Paranormal Romance, it doesn't really HAVE to make sense, you know?
The book starts from Darcy's POV. Life is good generally speaking, well, if we don't consider the fact she can't for the life of her put a kiss she shared 20 years ago with a guy who disappeared the day after.. Yet twenty years later he reappears in the small town of Carlisle repeating what he said to her after they kissed - I belong to you and you belong to me. Darcy is a botanic, she is a scientific person it doesn't make sense to her the connection and the strange stuff that seems to be happening whenever they meet. Willow, her best friend and the town's doctor, doesn't make sense of all of that either and the "ghost stories" from her native heritage she tells Darcy aren't ones she necessary believes in (though she has much respect of the culture).
Darcy is confused but she is mostly attracted to Jake in a way she can't put aside. Not even enough to ask the hard questions. Jake SEEMS to answer her, but the answers never really satisfy.. and when she does stumble upon the truth, it breaks her heart. Some things about a guy's circumstances could be understood, but some are more than just "difficult to swallow".
This is the place where we switch to Jake's POV. Jake has spent the last 20 years making it possible for him to make a future with Darcy. Being a full blooded wolf creature binded to a human isn't something anyone has EVER had an experience with. Binding suppose to happen between wolfs. Jake stayed away, he worked on his control so he won't be of harm to her and now he is here, and he still doesn't know how to tell her and when she finds out he is at a loss for words himself. Returning to his home we are introduced to his world. So we sort of get the "world building" near the end, which was kinda cool, I liked that. We were already into the story, and yeah, it's not hard for US to guess jake's reasons for being evasive. But understanding the lore, the life of the other "werewolves", their rules and even family structure made everything more clear, and also made jake's position so difficult and very unique. I didn't see the "cliffhanger" coming. I was so into the new world that we are introduced into, I somehow missed the "signs" and so was left with my jaw open wanting to grab the next one ASAP.
I loved both Darcy and Jake. Maybe Jake a little bit more? Darcy was very skeptical, I could understand where she was coming from, and yet I wanted her to be less emotional and more rational. Jake was so tormented, the poor guy! He has been Darcy's shadow for so many years and though I know some people would find some of his ways a bit creepy, he IS a werewolf so.. yeah.. expect wolfy traits ;) The relationship buildup might seem a bit rash, but I think with everything they shared it made perfect sense which is why they are both tormented about how to make a future together possible. Add to the mix our Cliffhanger and you are left with an URGE to get the full story in the second part, which by the way will be out two weeks after this one - 17th of January 2017.
I've read quite a lot of Katy's books, actually I only have one series (the first she wrote) and it's naturally scheduled for the near future. I didn't know what to expect really, I enjoyed her Contemporary Romance novels but Paranormal means adding a whole new layer to a story. I really liked the lore and the way it was brought to us. I wasn't overwhelmed with details or characters (or creatures..), the story was very fluid and easy to follow, especially because it was basically about THEM and the whole Paranormal while being always in the background was more heavily introduced only later on.
I could write SO MUCH MORE about this novel, there are so many interesting characters, other relationships in the making, suspense which will be mostly be dealt with in the second part so a lot is going on, there's the unique world Katy built, but mostly there is Jake and Darcy going from past to present trying to build a future based on one single binding kiss.
