Edge of Dawn (Midnight Breed #11 - Mira and Kellan) by Lara Adrian

Oh my, oh my...
After the last book (which I rated 3 stars..) and after how things ended I didn't know what to expect..
Lara surely re-invented the series while keeping what's important to the story - The characters we SO love and the ones we wanted to see as grown-ups.
Now, there are so many opportunities!
First story was meant to be Kellan and Mira.. It couldn't be any other one.

I LOVED this book. couldn't get enough of it!
and simply CAN'T WAIT for Nathan's book. I loved who and how he is. his friendship with Kellan and Mira.

Mira and Kellan story was remarkable. it was full of angst. I felt my stomach aching half the book waiting to see how it will turn out for them because never mind how you try to see it work - it doesn't. Basically Kellan leaves Mira (who thinks he is dead) because he knows he is going to hurt her badly. In his eyes, leaving her (8 years before the story we are reading now) is for the best. HER best. But Mira never let go of Kellan, she just couldn't, and he couldn't forget about her either. When their path crosses he realized that there are things you simply can't hide or run from. Fate and love. Love might be hope but Fate is very grim for the both of them..

On the previous book we learned there is another breed walking the earth, probably the one that breeds the Breesmates with humans. In this book we hear a little more about them. We still have a lot of un-answered questions but I feel that this turn of events is very interesting.

I loved seeing the new "kids" in the order. Dante and Tess, Tegan and Elise, Chase and Tavia. also Lucan and Gabrielle has a son. we have another one pregnant (not saying who :))
I am also very edgy about one of Chase and Tavia's twins.. can't wait to see how THAT turns out! :D
I have a feeling we'll have a glimpse of that in Nathan's book.

All in all - GREAT book! SOOO happy that it didn't disappoint! (after the previous one and after the change of events..)

ABOUT THE MCs

Mira
Orphaned in Montreal and abducted at the age of eight by the same Breed elder for whom Renata worked (Sergei Yakut). Mira is a Breedmate girl with a precognitive gift for showing someone an event fated to take place in their future. Her ability comes with a price, however: each vision she gives takes away some of her eyesight. To combat this problem, she wore a veil over her eyes during the timeline of Veil of Midnight. After becoming a resident of the Order’s compound in Boston, Mira was given custom-crafted purple contacts, created by Gideon, to protect her eyes and mute her seer’s gift to others who might look into her gaze. Mira was nicknamed “Mouse” by Renata, who’s become a surrogate mother to the girl. During the timeline of Veil of Midnight, several people saw visions in Mira’s eyes: Nikolai, Hunter, Sergei Yakut, Edgar Fabien, and Dragos. During the timeline of Ashes of Midnight, Mira accidently showed Claire a vision of Andreas’s death by flames and smoke. During events in Darker After Midnight, Mira inadvertently shows Lucan a vision of war and bloodshed that soon comes to pass. Mira’s closest friends, aside from Renata and Nikolai, are Kellan Archer and Nathan. She has a special connection to Hunter as well, who is fiercely protective of her. Mira is also immensely fond of the Order’s resident canines, Harvard and Luna. Although Mira is a child through the timeline of Darker After Midnight, her full romantic story is told twenty years afterward in Edge of Dawn.
Hair: blond Eyes: a white so pure they seem colorless, mirror-like
Breedmate mark: in her hairline near her left temple Bloodscent: lily of the valley
Unique ability: Precognition, but she does not see or interpret the visions, which play out for the observer as though in a mirror.

Kellan Archer
Breed male, third generation. Son of Christophe Archer, grandson of Lazaro and Eleanor Archer. Kellan is fourteen years old during the timeline of Taken by Midnight, where he is first introduced in the series as the Darkhaven teen of a prominent Boston family who’s abducted and held for ransom by Dragos’s men. Kellan’s abduction was actually a ruse meant to give Dragos the chance to find the location of the Order’s Boston compound, a goal achieved when the Order rescues the teen and brings him and his grandfather, Lazaro, into Order protection at their headquarters. It is soon discovered that Dragos embedded a GPS device in Kellan’s stomach, which the boy vomits up, alerting the Order that their longtime secret compound has been compromised. Kellan Archer is a sullen boy, bereft over the loss of his parents and all but one of his family members (Lazaro Archer) in a Darkhaven explosion carried out at Dragos’s command. Mira befriends Kellan immediately, deciding he will be her best friend whether he likes it or not (he doesn’t). During his recuperation with the Order, Kellan continues to withdraw, refusing to feed until Lucan takes him out to hunt in Darker After Midnight. He wants to join the Order for revenge on Dragos, but Lucan denies him, telling him he’s too young and wants it for the wrong reason. Later on in Darker After Midnight, Kellan takes part in a snowball fight with Nathan. When Mira gets hit with one of Nathan’s volleys, Kellan reacts with swift, protective fury. The two teen vampires grapple, and Kellan, sensing Nathan’s lethal skill and training, asks him to teach him everything he knows. Although Kellan is only a teenager as of the timeline of Darker After Midnight, his full romantic story is told twenty years afterward in Edge of Dawn.
Hair: ginger as a teen; brownish-copper, the color of an old penny, as an adult Eyes: hazel
Unique ability: can read a human’s true intentions with his touch.

ABOUT THIS SERIES

Midnight Breed by Lara Adrian is one of my absolute favorite Paranormal Romance Series. Like many of the series in this genre, we have a group of vampire warriors who are in charge of defending their race.

The Order mainly protect the general population (vampire AND humans) from rouge vampires. Vampires whose crave for blood have reached a point of no return meaning they can no longer control themselves and since there is nothing to be done about this situation these rouges vampires have to be put down. Besides obvious risk to the human population, rouges / rabid vampires also are a treat in the sense that vampires live in secret groups (called Darkhavens) there they can live their separate lives without probing human eyes. Naturally they are a part of the general population but the way they live, in a sort of community, helps them maintain their traditions and way of living.

In the recent years, the Order became infamous. There is no respect for the members of the Order and moreover they are treated like "barbarians", the vampire population doesn't believe that they are even needed but boy oh boy they are wrong.. dark days are ahead..

In the beginning, years and years ago, a group of highly strong vampires crushed on Earth. They are the base of the vampire population nowadays. As is seems there are no female vampires, only males. The females that can reproduce with vampires are called "breedmates" and they can be distinguished by a certain mark (crescent moon with a drop) that each breedmate has somewhere on her body. Each breedmate also has a special (inhuman) ability which she transfers to her vampire son. Thus every vampire has a special ability passed to him from his human mother. Breedmates need to drink blood in order to enhance their special ability and sometimes so they can control it and it won't take over her life.  It takes time until the ancestry of the breedmates is explained, it adds another layer to the story and brings the Order with another adversary they weren't expecting.

Each book has it's separate story in which each warrior finds himself a breedmate / compatible mate. As you can guess, the Order isn't notorious for no reason.. most of the warriors are somehow "damaged", preferring to live a life in the Order rather than build a life of their own. Finding their mate makes them deal with their past and free themselves from its bindings. Beside the personal plot line there is also a bigger plot line about the main villain progressing from the first book until the 10th. From the 11th book (till the final 18th installment) there is a very significant change following a progression in 20 years changing the whole setting of the series with different villains as well as introducing new characters to the series - some the sons and daughters from the first 10 installments and of course we get to meet the older version of the parents as well.

The main issue I had with the series in the beginning was the similarities between it and the general setting of the Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R. Ward. It only feels this way at the first, it takes a TOTALLY different direction plot-wise and character-wise which after reading enough of the two series I gotta say I MUCH prefer this one (I actually abandoned that one a while back..).

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !!!

When the whiffs of the end of this beloved series started to get suffocating Lara announced a Spin-Off called "Hunter Legacy". The series will consist of stand-alone novels of the "Last Boys" - the Gen One Hunters who were bred as weapons of war by Dragos and were freed by The Order round the middle of the series.
