Though this was a SUPERB book I was SO disappointed to realize the book ends with a cliffhanger and there in NO third book in sight (Correction!!! The 3rd book was FINALLY published in the beginning of 2021). I mean Tere has said the book is practically ready but for some reason it hasn't been published yet. So while I DEFINITELY recommend this book (and the previous one, keep in mind there are still a lot of unanswered questions and though Cade and Nox got closer together they still have a way to go before they can even call themselves a couple.
The previous book ended with Nox Boyet and his "son" Sam, together with Cade Creel, Mason Todd, Rachel Moon and Damian running away from New York City to Cade's family farm in South Carolina. It felt awkward at first but with Cade's mother cooking a storm (and helping Sam get back in shape), his father patrolling with his shotgun (even if he plays the unhappy disappointed parent) and his brother who somehow turned into a hacker they manage to regroup and try to piece everything together. I wouldn't say Nox warmed up to Rachel (Jenny) but he came to realize she has a lot of knowledge that can help them solve the mystery of what's REALLY going on.
It's obvious to everyone they were "lucky" to make it alive with the police and the feds looking for them but WERE they lucky or was someone helping them and who could it be? They spend most of this installment trying to figure things out and while there are more revelations we are still left hanging at a few key points especially after they decide to leave Cade's home behind and go back to the city to clear their names.
Relationship wise there's progress for sure. Getting more of Sam's POV we see him and Mason come even closer together. It was cute and endearing really. Mason was exactly what Sam needed. His gentle care and understanding was everything especially when Sam learns a little bit more about what they are dealing with as well as about his past. It was a devastating point for Nox and Sam to have this conversation and though I don't think he got everything out of Nox he got enough and it was truly heart breaking. Nox loves Sam SO MUCH but he made a few bad decisions concerning what he was willing and mostly unwilling to say to Sam, forgetting for a moment there Sam is an adult... But I could totally get it. Nox have been on his own his whole life, even when his parents were alive. He had no one to trust and no one to share his burdens which also shows in his relationship with Cade. He might want more but he doesn't know how to ask or how to accept what Cade lovingly offers. In a way it's easier to accept the truce between him and Rachel.. As they both have everything to lose/win in this situation. But love? He doesn't know how to handle that. Cade from his part is frustrated with Nox and yet he isn't willing to give up on him, on them. Even when Nox gets on his nerves. There's also a promise of another relationship between Rachel and Cade's brother LJ. Can't wait to see how this one unfolds!
For me this book was mostly about relationships as there is not a lot "happening" in the farm. Near the end when they are on their way to the city they encounter someone they know and were actually worried about - Alec (who used to work with Cade at the Iron Butterfly). Things got complicated at that point for a number of reasons. We, or rather, Nox got quite the blow when he learned a bit more about the behind the scenes of the drug "Dead Bolt" and it's distribution on the island. But sadly for us, that's right around where this book ends with us left hanging..... I REALLY hope Tere will gets around to finishing the last book and publishing it. I CAN'T WAIT to get the ending of this story! (As mentioned above - the 3rd installment is already out and it's everything I wished it would be!)
Yep, it's HIGHLY recommended though I'm bummed about the cliffhanger..

ABOUT THIS SERIES
The Vigilante is a Sci-Fi / Dystopian Romance series by Tere Michaels. While I'm definitely NOT the "end of the world" kinda gal, this series GRIPPED me in a way I can't even start to describe. I swallowed the books, not being able to stop.
In a dystopian near future, New York City has become the epicenter of decadence--gambling, the flesh trade, a playground for the wealthy. And underneath? Crime, fueled by "Dead Bolt," a destructive designer drug. This New City is where Nox Boyet leads a double life. At night, he is the Vigilante, struggling to keep the streets safe for citizens abandoned by the corrupt government and police. During the day, he works in construction and does his best to raise his adopted teenaged son, Sam.
A mysterious letter addressed to Sam brings Nox in direct contact with "model" Cade Creel, a high-end prostitute working at the Iron Butterfly Casino. Suspicion gives way to an intense attraction as dark figures from Nox's past and the mysterious peddlers of Dead Bolt begin to descend--and put all their lives in danger. When things spin out of control, Cade is the only person Nox can trust to help him save Sam.
When Nox Boyet and Cade Creel meet for the first time their meter both shows DANGER. Nox is worried the letter Cade has brought into his hands will be the end of the secure and sheltered life he has build for Sam. Cade on the other hand might work a job that COULD be dangerous his day to day life is rather convenient. This "favor" for a client, delivering a letter, starts innocent enough until he actually visits the "District" where life is truly horrible, it has opened his eyes but also put him in a great danger from everyone especially Nox. Yet somehow they find each other working together against unknown enemies, trying to find allies in the most corrupts city of all.
The romance in this series had a very interesting arc. I liked the way it progressed as it took them time to trust one another and see they can have something real and that's not only concerning Nox and Cade, there are two more couples struggling to find their footing - Sam and Mason as well as KJ and Rachel.
Tere published the first two books way back in 2014! "Lucky" for me I started reading them in the middle of 2020 meaning I only had to wait about 8 month for the next installment. Considering the MAJOR cliffhanger the 2nd ended with I was besides myself not knowing if we're EVER going to get an ending to the series. The 3rd book ended in a very positive note and yet the very last chapter does offer a continuation at least with one more book. Truly CANNOT WAIT for more.
