WOW. I can't really tell you what I expected this novella to be like because I don't even know myself.. I haven't even read the synopsis until AFTER I finished it so I didn't even know what it's going to be about so everything was a surprise as I was reading it. I'm not a fan of Sci-Fi but I AM a fan of Cari so I HAD to give it a go even if I was skeptical about it - silly me..
Lieutenant Commander Cyril Konstantin, our sole POV, is a Russian soldier on a special training in the Evergreen project with a few selected officers from all over the world. The mission is a one way ticket (not to the moon, stop humming for a second) to Mars. Though he is extremely passionate about the program he isn't a very friendly guy so the only person he connects with is the one guy who started talking to him first - Captain Scott Andrews. It doesn't take him more than two sentences to introduce himself as Scottie and nickname Cyril - Cy. From there a tight friendship forms which soon blossoms into a relationship even if a rather secret one considering they are not allowed to have a relationship between the group.
Cy doesn't have any family members he cares about after his mother's death. His two half brothers are a mess even if he actually liked them and his father is a tough, emotionless guy who only cares about his business that's without mentioning his dislike to Cy's sexual orientation. Scottie's only family is a sister he is VERY close with and who is also on the program, so for all three leaving Earth isn't a hardship - on the contrary.
Things takes a turn when Cy is hurt badly. He is outed from the program severing any connection he has to it, and being swept into his father's influence. Scottie and his sister don't know anything about Cy's condition and even if they did, they don't have any way to communicate. But even when Cy finds a way to see Scottie again their time together is limited until Scottie's deployment so the time is bitter sweet. Cy might be doing his best to fond this project through his father's company but there is no way he can go with Scottie and Scottie can't leave the project or his sister just to stay with his lover. Not after everything he went through to be in this program in the first place.
Things get even more complicated once Scottie and his sister (and the rest of the crew) flies to Mars and then Cy have to make his own decisions. Living without Scottie is a heart ache he can't tolerate and especially with everything happening in Mars he needs to take one HELL of a chance to make a future for both of them together.
HIGHLY recommended. Really. Even if you're not into Sci-Fi (like me) the story of Cy and Scottie is so compelling. Though it's rather short we get a feeling of a whole story, of a relationship buildup and a whole journey for both characters. It was heart breaking for at least half of it, but in a way it's what made it so special, their ability to make the best of what they can, to love each other as much as possible in the time they have together.
