How are you with slow burn? If you're like me and you LOVE IT, this book, YEAH THIS BOOK. There isn't even a real "romance" in this book until somewhere around the middle, it's just us getting to know Pax and Cliff but also Bianca (Cliff's sister), Luca (Pax's roommate) and Henry (the neighbor on the other side). This book is about the romance but for me it's more about friendship. TRUE friendship and how it changes everything in the inside. You don't have to hang out with your friends all the time, but knowing they will be THERE when you need them is what truly allows you not to feel alone even when you are (at the moment).
Patrick "Pax" Polo is on a mission! He's going to make his band-mates take him back! The fallout he had with Blake won't change that. The others are his friends, they have been together for many years, they just need a little bit of time to figure some things out.. So in the meanwhile he finds a place to stay with the young Luca who doesn't have a care in the world, except for the beautiful teenager next door he is too shy to talk to (even if her brother wouldn't slay him for trying..). Pax decides to help him as well as Henry (who lives in the other side of Bianca and Cliff's house) - both pining over the beautiful sweet Bianca. Especially when Henry offers to help him out get an AMAZING gig for the band - if only he would distract Cliff...
Pax can charm ANYONE. It's his thing. People adore him, and not just if they know him from his band "Serenity Free". It's his THING. So how come Cliff Wilson seem TOTALLY immune? He'll try harder. He can DO this. Even if he has to wake up EXCEPTIONALLY early to run with the guy or fake play the piano "as Luca". But somewhere along the line there IS a friendship building up as well as Cliff allowing the two silly Luca and Henry enjoy a bit of time with Bianca (mostly supervised...).
As I said, the story is about friendship before it's about romance. Cliff and Pax are friends long before anything happens.. but also with Henry, Luca and Bianca. They form a tight circle of people who share much more than attraction. They help each other out, they are there for one another and even if it starts superficial it doesn't stay this way. There is a lot for both Cliff and Pax (as well as the others) to learn about what matters in life, about what they want or need.
In the end Pax got everything he wanted and rather nothing from it was what he EXPECTED to get or find. I guess that's true for Cliff as well. For the happy trio of Luca, Biance and Henry - I guess as well :) It was sweet seeing all of them together sometimes plotting, other times just enjoying themselves. Looking for happiness and close and meaningful relationships.
While I wasn't sure about this book in the first chapters, mostly because Pax seems too much "fun and games and nothing more" THAT'S exactly what he needed everyone to see and it didn't take long to realize that, mostly Cliff who sees RIGHT THROUGH Pax and his acts. It was endearing seeing how Cliff was basically waiting for Pax to make the next step. He was there, by his side, always pushing him but while it was obvious to ME what he was doing, it took Pax long enough to realize Cliff isn't tormenting him for his own enjoyment but for Pax's growth.
Another amazing read by Anyta. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
